Bible Paper

  • 2026-10-23 19:39:48

Bible paper, is a thin and high-quality printing paper specifically designed for printing books with a large number of pages that require long-term carrying and reading. Its core mission is to meet high strength, high opacity, and delicate printing adaptability at extremely low weight.

Raw Material Process

The essence of Bible paper is thin, highly opaque uncoated (or micro coated) chemical pulp paper. Its raw material is mainly bleached chemical wood pulp, and some traditional formulas or specific products may add ingredients such as cotton and flax to enhance toughness. In order to prevent through printing on extremely thin paper sheets, a large amount of high-quality fillers (such as titanium dioxide) are added during production and lightly coated. Then, they are copied on a long net multi cylinder thin paper machine and finally subjected to super calendering treatment to obtain a smooth and delicate paper surface.

Common Weight and Size

With the advancement of technology, the weight range of Bible paper has been greatly expanded.

Common weight: Traditional and mainstream specifications are concentrated between 25g/m ² and 40g/m ². According to the latest trend of national standard revision, in order to meet different needs, ultra-thin sizes of 19g/m ² and high specification sizes of 50g/m ², 60g/m ², and even 70g/m ² have also been included in the standard scope.

Common sizes: The width of the roll paper is commonly 787mm and 880mm; The common sizes of flat paper are 787mm × 1092mm and 880mm × 1230mm.

Technical Indicators

The technical indicators of Bible paper revolve around "thin yet strong, white yet opaque"

Opacity: This is a key indicator. For low weight products, extremely high requirements are required, such as a requirement of ≥ 72.0% for ordinary types with 19g/m ² and ≥ 75.0% for micro coated types; As the weight increases, the opacity requirement also increases to over 80%.

Strength: The longitudinal tensile index is usually required to be ≥ 35.0 N · m/g, and the transverse bending resistance has clear frequency requirements depending on the weight, in order to ensure the fracture resistance on high-speed rotary printing machines.

Smoothness and Whiteness: The smoothness requirement for ordinary type is ≥ 30s, and for micro coated type it is ≥ 80s; D65 brightness usually requires ≥ 80.0%.

Characteristics and Applications

Core features: thin and strong (high tensile strength, continuous printing), high opacity (clear and non transparent printing of small-sized characters), white and delicate paper surface (high smoothness, good restoration of dots).

Main use: In addition to the most typical dictionaries, lexicons, and Bibles, it is also widely used in pocket manuals, reference books, encyclopedias, scientific materials, and other refined printed materials that require extreme compression thickness.

Bible paper is a typical representative of the "every inch of land must be contested" in papermaking technology. It strikes a balance between extreme physical thickness and rigorous optical performance, allowing vast amounts of knowledge to be condensed into a single inch. From traditional Bibles to modern portable reference books, the evolution of this type of paper has always served humanity's underlying needs for high-density information carrying and reading.
